Marc Jones, Sheila Lockhart, Tammy Griffin and Stephanie Reitz have earned their CORE certification.

Jones, Lockhart, Griffin and Reitz

Five staff members have completed the necessary requirements for the CORE certification offered through the Professional Development Center (PDC). Recipients are: Tammy Griffin, Dean’s Office; Marc Jones, Facilities and Campus Services; Sheila Lockhart, Department of Religion; Jennifer Price, Facilities and Campus Services; Stephanie Reitz, Center for Bioethics, Health, and Society

CORE, which stands for “Cultivating our Organization to Realize Excellence,” was launched in September of 2011 as an outcome of the climate survey to offer more sustained developmental options for faculty and staff on campus. CORE is built around five competencies that are meaningful and relevant to the campus: communication, community, leadership, organizational acumen and personal progression.

The CORE Program allows participants to recognize personal and professional strengths that can be applied to better themselves and the campus community.

steve.virgil.300x175Associate Clinical Professor of Law Steve Virgil has been named executive director of experiential education for the Wake Forest University School of Law.

In his new role, Virgil will both support existing programs, including clinics, internships, externships and practicum extensions, and seek out new opportunities for meaningful experiential education. He will also provide support to faculty who integrate practical training into their doctrinal courses.

The position was created, in part, to help the law school adhere to proposed new standards set by the American Bar Association for oversight of experiential learning.

Virgil has served as founding director of Wake Forest’s Community Law and Business Clinic since 2008 and is also the founding director of the Institute for Public Engagement, a university-wide institute that promotes community based participatory research and engaged teaching.

He has practiced law for more than 20 years with an emphasis on community economic development and the nonprofit sector. His clients include nonprofit organizations of all sizes and scope, from neighborhood associations to major private foundations and he maintains an active pro bono public interest litigation practice.

He teaches courses on community economic development, poverty, evidence and the nonprofit sector.

david.coates.300x175An op-ed, “Freedom, to live, must be understood,” written by David Coates, Worrell Chair in Anglo-American Studies, generated so much response when it ran in the Greensboro News & Record in December that editorial writer Doug Clark followed up with a column of his own on Jan. 8 about Coates’ ideas and the discussion that followed.

Clark wrote:  “Coates, a professor of Anglo-American Studies at Wake Forest University, used the example of the Affordable Care Act to briefly examine the conflict between “negative” and “positive” freedoms. ‘We enjoy negative freedom when we are free from rules blocking our ability to act,’ Coates wrote. ‘We enjoy positive freedom when we possess enough resources to act as we wish.’”

Read Clark’s full editorial in the Greensboro News & Record. Coates regularly writes about U.S. politics on Huffington Post (see www.davidcoates.net), and is the author of several books.

WFU’s first physician assistant, Yvonne Greenlee, retires

shs.300x175Yvonne Greenlee, who has been a physician assistant in the Student Health Service for 41 years, retired Jan. 17.

When she was hired in September of 1972, Greenlee was the first physician assistant ever hired on campus.  At the time, she was told she was also the first African-American professional staff member at the University.  She was in the second graduating class of the School of Medicine’s physician assistant program.

“Personally, I still recall the impact she had on my life when I entered Wake Forest in 1976 because she was the first black woman I’d met in the medical field other than those in nursing,” said Barbee Oakes, Wake Forest’s assistant provost for diversity and inclusion. “As a pioneer, her resilience, courage and professionalism influenced my decision to pursue graduate studies.”

Greenlee said being a physician assistant suited her personality. “I have the fun of seeing students and trying to diagnose them.  A lot involved in helping students is reminding them that they are going to get through it.”

On her last day, she said she was rereading some of the letters students have sent her over the years.  “I like knowing I helped someone and that they realize I helped them.”

Campus life leaders Marianne Magjuka, Shelley Sizemore and Matt Williams, have been recognized as Wake Forest University’s 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. “Building the Dream” award winners.

The award is traditionally presented to a student and a professor or administrator from both Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) who exemplify King’s qualities and promote diversity within the community. This year, one student and three campus leaders were recognized at Wake Forest.

Magjuka, Sizemore and Williams were recognized for planning and leading a weeklong Alternative Spring Break civil rights tour through Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. Thirty-three students in eight days visited the National Civil Rights Museum, the National Voting Rights Museum, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Archives, The Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Southern Poverty Law Center, among other places.

Alta Mauro, director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, designed the co-curricular initiative with Magjuka and the two worked to develop educational lessons to help the multi-racial, multi-ethnic group of students to reflect on issues of race, gender, power and privilege. As a member of the award-granting body, Mauro chose not to be recognized formally in connection with the award.

Junior Gracie Harrington received the student award.

Faculty, staff and students at Wake Forest submit “Building the Dream” award nominations for their respective universities and a committee of representatives from each school selects winners. The recipients were recognized at an annual banquet celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. held at Wake Forest on Jan. 20.

The SAC’s website offers easy directions for registering to receive the monthly newsletter.  All that is required is providing one’s name and e-mail address.

The newsletter features the SAC’s new logo, developed last fall.

The initial newsletter was sent mostly to SAC members with directions on how they could pass it along to a colleague.  The newsletter also explains how one can register to receive it.

The current newsletter announces that Director of Athletics Ron Wellman will speak at the Jan. 28 SAC meeting in Farrell Hall’s Broyhill Auditorium.  All staff members are welcome to attend the meeting that will run from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Wellman plans to provide an update on what is happening at Lawrence Joel Veterans Coliseum, explain upcoming changes at the ACC and their impact on Wake Forest, and discuss Wake Forest’s unique position in the ACC.

The newsletter also offers information about the previous SAC meeting, including highlights of a presentation by Penny Rue, vice president for campus life.

ed.morris.300x175Ed Morris, director of the Wake Forest Historical Museum, was recently profiled in the Raleigh News & Observer by Marti Maguire.

“It’s been about 180 years since Wake Forest College was founded on a plot of farmland northeast of Raleigh, giving birth also to the town that still bears its name,” writes Maguire.

“The college, now Wake Forest University, moved to Winston-Salem in 1956. Yet the shared history of town and college is remembered in fond detail at the Wake Forest Historical Museum, where a wreath made from the hair of local residents shares billing with the original Demon Deacon tuxedo. Ed Morris has spent the past eight years breathing new life into the museum. He has helped assemble, in a new building, artifacts collected over more than 50 years to create a coherent tale of both town and college.”
